Andrea Black

Therapist (MSW)

I have supported children, teens, families and adults for over 20 years in various roles including government programs and supporting mental health in the community, doctor’s offices and in schools. I adopt a trauma-informed, compassionate, and person-centred approach to therapy. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where you feel heard, understood and validated. We all have times when we struggle and it’s during those times that we can get stuck on old patterns and sometimes unhealthy ways of coping. This can show up as avoidance, frustration, stress or addiction, to name a few. If you are having issues as a parent, in your workplace, with your partner, in your friendships or within yourself, I am here to help you consider some new strategies and perspectives.

My background has given me experience in supporting adults and children with a variety of challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-esteem, emotional regulation, anger, self-harm, parenting and life transitions.

Healing happens through connection and relationship which is why I bring my genuine self to each therapy session. I am client-centred and strengths-based while using modalities such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). When working with children I take a hands-on approach using play activities, supporting the parent-child relationship and building parent’s skills.

Life is messy, confusing, disappointing, loving, hopeful, exciting and, definitely imperfect. There’s no road map but, you are the expert on you. Therapy is a place where you can confront challenges, embrace discomfort, nurture understanding and celebrate growth and accomplishments. I strive to increase your understanding and skills and harness your strengths. My goal is to empower you to navigate your emotions, build resilience, and cultivate the understanding and self-compassion needed to heal and move forward to being your best self.

I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW # 12344) with a Master’s Degree in Social Work, specializing in clinical social work and trauma-informed practice. Additionally, I have training and designation in the area of conflict and mediation.

Young adults often feel enormous pressure to have things all figured out and can feel conflicted - wanting to be independent but at the same time wanting to retreat back to the simplicity of childhood. It’s a scary time and those are all normal feelings. In therapy we can explore all of this together. I won’t give you the answers, but I will walk beside you in a safe and non-judgmental way while you learn more about yourself.
