One of my favourite quotes is by German poet, novelist and painter, Herman Hesse:
“When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured.”
This quote reflects my beliefs about counselling and my approach to working with each individual. Each person experiences their life differently and each experience a person undergoes impacts and influences them, positive or negative, or somewhere in-between. Because of these experiences, we may find ourselves feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a place of pain or uncertainty. Counselling can be a supportive place in which to safely explore and process these experiences and the feelings, thoughts, and behaviours that go along with them. I believe that everyone has the capacity to be strong and resilient, and that everyone has an innate ability to grow and heal and to overcome their scars and struggles but that they sometimes need support and guidance to find these qualities within themselves. I believe my role as a counsellor is to offer support and guidance in uncovering these qualities, and in experiencing the growth and change they desire.
